What Meta decided (and what it didn't)
Meta's measure concerns “general-purpose” AI chatbots — generic assistants — built on the WhatsApp Business API, the platform used by businesses. It is not an indiscriminate ban on “AI on WhatsApp”: it targets a specific use on a specific channel.
In some markets, including Italy and Brazil, the measure was suspended after antitrust authorities stepped in (in Italy the AGCM, late 2025): for local numbers the situation is therefore different from how it was reported. Elsewhere the restriction remains in force and the picture is evolving.
It's important to be precise: this does not mean there is “only one legal way” to have AI on WhatsApp, nor that any automation is free of risk. It means that anyone relying on the official Business API for a generic AI assistant now faces more uncertainty.
